Meiyazhagan: Story Written Updated
Arul an introvert, portrayed by Arvind Swami is a man, who has come back to his village Thanjavur after many years. The narrator – renamed Arul – misses his childhood and youth, though patterns of his teenage years’ trauma remain in his memories. Recalling his past, he wanders around and meets M, who is characterized by Karthi, a boy who is totally opposite to Arul, a cheerful introverted boy who has known Arul.
M is innocent in his approach to life, or better yet, childish. He feels a profound level of love for people, animals, and even objects – this is also somewhere here that Tanner has his home. This can barely be compared to Arul who is quite reserved in his conduct all through the novel. At first, Arul does not go near M with a ten-foot pole but as the night deepens the two have a series of conversations that reveal more of Arul and his past.
In such valuable conversations of strangers, they are told about the main character’s mistakes and about the transition of Arul from an optimistic extroverted teenager to a man with many thoughts. The film also hints at lessons inter alia, about forgiveness, about simplicity, about the cycle of good deeds and redemption.
M has a major part in playing to enable Arul come to terms with his internal battles. Arul is moved by his hope and willingness not to condemn him for his past actions to start a process of getting over it. The nature of their relationship is presented as very close to the divine – Arul looks to M as to his spiritual counselor and leader in his journey of emotion.
The film, like many others by director Prem Kumar, who also brought us the 96 movie, is more about feelings and scenes than it is about a narrative. It brings the essence of everyday happenings staring at the stars, cycling or having a deep meaningful conversation.
By the end, Arul starts to destine the feelings that were holding him down and at last makes amends due to the influence of M. The story makes the main point of that recovering and finding a way reconciling stems from unlikely sources and, therefore, the way to start a people’s salvation is in re-rooting.
Well encompassing the fundamentals of love, memories, and relationships, the movie carries tries to pray to the nostalgia-darlings of Arvind Swami and Karthi. This being its low key, introspective atmosphere and accompanied by beautiful visuals and released along with the haunting music by Govind Vasantha.
